Review & {Giveaway} Gordy And The Magic Diet

Gordy & The Magic Diet

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I love getting to read and review children’s books.  It’s probably because I spent a lot of time reading when I was younger.  Books allowed me to visit far away places, swim with the dolphins in the open sea, travel back in time where I was, in fact, a princess, etc.  But above all else – books taught me, in a way that my parents couldn’t: how to make good choices, accept others, share my toys and so much more. Even now I tend to pull out books from my childhood (Berenstain Bears) and read them to my little men.

I’ve also found books written about food allergies to be especially helpful when teaching my little men and their friends about the dangers of food allergies and how to keep everyone safe.  However, I’m excited to share with you a book doesn’t focus on all of the ins and outs of food allergies.  It’s Gordy And The Magic Diet.

Gordy And The Magic Diet focuses on the importance for some children to refrain from eating certain foods that make them sick.  It is written and illustrated by moms (Kim Diersen, April Runge & Carrie Hartman) whose children have had to go on a “magic diet” for various reasons.  The book does not specifically talk about food allergies, but I actually like it for that.  I feel like as a food allergy mom I am constantly talking to my little men about their allergies.  We talk often about the importance of always carrying their medicine bags with us wherever we go and why they need to remember to wear their medical ID bracelets.  To have a book that is more focused on the diet is a breath of fresh air.  Plus the storyline & illustrations are creative, imaginative, and perfect for my little men.

My boys loved the book and loved following Gordy on his adventure to rid himself of the monster that lived in his belly.  My youngest kept saying, “Gordy is just like me!  I have a monster in my belly, too!”  It led to a wonderful discussion about the importance of their “magic diet.”  Now when I tell my little men that they can’t have something because it would make them sick, they respond with, “oh yeah, that’s not in my magic diet.”  This book has given my little men the confidence that they needed to tackle their “magic diets.”  And for that I’m beyond grateful!
